October 30, 2011: Salmonella Outbreak Linked To Recalled Wegmans Pine Nuts

Recent Salmonella Enteritidis Outbreak Is Linked to Pine Nuts Sold At Wegmans - Turkish pine nuts, sold in bulk at Wegmans grocery stores, have been linked to a multistate Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak.  So far, a total of 42 individuals from six states have been reported to the CDC as having tested positive for the outbreak Salmonella strain.  The number of confirmed cases per state is as follows: Arizona (1), Maryland (1), New Jersey (2), New York (26), Pennsylvania (8), and Virginia (4).  According to the CDC the illnesses began on or after about August 20, 2011.
 
The Wegmans Pine Nut Recall – On October 26, 2011, Wegmans Food Markets recalled 5,000 lbs of Turkish pine nuts sold in the Bulk Foods department of most Wegmans stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Maryland after the nuts were linked to an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses.  The nuts were sold between July 1 and October 18, 2011. The recalled Turkish pine nuts were imported from Turkey by Sunrise Commodities of Englewood Cliffs, here in N.J.
 
According to the CDC, some of the recalled Turkish pine nuts were consumed as an ingredient in prepared foods sold at Wegmans, such as Caprese salad or asparagus with pine nuts.
 
Salmonella Symptoms - Symptoms of Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) may include diarrhea (sometime bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food.  Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in infants and young children, those who are immunocompromised, and in frail or elderly persons.
 
What You Can Do If You Suspect A Salmonella Infection - If you suspect that you may have contracted Salmonella or are experiencing food poisoning symptoms, contact your healthcare professional. He or she can order a stool culture to confirm Salmonella infection. Let your doctor know that you consumed pine nuts or handled pine nuts that may have been recalled.
