On April 1, 2011, Jennie-O issued a recall for approximately 55,000 pounds of its frozen raw turkey burger, because the products may be contaminated with the foodborne pathogen Salmonella serotype Hadar. The recalled burgers have been linked to at least 12 illnesses.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, has cautioned that this particular outbreak strain of Salmonella is resistant to many commonly used antibiotics, increasing the risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected patients.
The following turkey burger product is subject to recall:
- 4-pound boxes of Jennie-O Turkey Store® "All Natural Turkey Burgers with seasonings Lean White Meat". Each box contains 12 1/3-pound individually wrapped burgers.
A use by date of “DEC 23 2011” and a lot code of “32718” through “32780” are printed on the side panel of the box, just above the opening tear strip. Within the USDA mark of inspection, located on the front of the box, is an establishment number reading “P-7760.” The products were distributed to retail establishments nationwide after being packaged on November 23, 2010.
States reporting illnesses linked to the outbreak include Arizona (1 case), California (1 case), Colorado (1 case), Georgia (1 case), Illinois (1 case), Missouri (1 case), Mississippi (1 case), Ohio (1 case), Washington (1 case), and Wisconsin (3 cases). The illnesses were diagnosed between December 27, 2010, and March 24, 2011, and resulted in three reported hospitalizations.
Symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food, and the illness usually lasts 4-7 days.
