Asher’s Chocolate Salmonella Recall – Asher’s Chocolates, Lewistown, PA, Inc., an affiliated partner of Chester A. Asher Inc. (Asher’s) has recalled its chocolates, chocolate bars, cellophane wrapped chocolates, and individually wrapped chocolates, etc. marketed under the Asher’s brand because the chocolate products may be contaminated with the foodborne pathogen, Salmonella. The recalled products were produced in the company’s Lewistown, PA facility and were distributed nationwide.
The potential for Salmonella contamination was noted after routine testing detected the presence of Salmonella in a group of products.

“Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
