August 7, 2009: Safeway, Von’s and Sam’s Club Recall Fresh Ground Beef Amid Concerns of Salmonella Contamination

Safeway, Von’s and Sam’s Club have issued a statement that they are recalling fresh ground beef sold with “use by” or “freeze by” dates of June 5 – July 11, 2009 due to the possibility of contamination with Salmonella.

Safeway and Von’s stores involved in the recall are located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota and Wyoming.  For a complete listing of Safeway and Von’s stores included in the recall click here

Sam’s Club stores include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming; and Unified Grocers in Southern California.

This recall comes in light of Beef Packers, Inc.’s, who is currently owned by Cargill Inc., previous announcement that their ground beef products have the potential to be tainted with Salmonella.

Safeway, Von’s and Sam’s Club urge consumers to check their freezers and discard any ground beef they may have purchased during that time period.
