April 12, 2020: Salmonella Hader Outbreak Linked to Ground Turkey

Salmonella outbreak linked to ground turkey news – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS), along with other state and local agencies, have announced that there is a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Hader linked to ground turkey.

Information on Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Ground Turkey

As of April 12, 2021, the CDC has reported 28 people, across 12 states, have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Hader linked to several ground turkey products. The CDC, USDA-FSIS, and state and local officials are continuing their investigation of this multi-state Salmonella outbreak, but epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data point to ground turkey as the source of the illnesses. Officials are continuing to investigate this outbreak.

The affected ground turkey products are:

  • Nature’s Promise (94% lean, 6% fat) – 1 lb. packages with dates 1/1, 1/3, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/10
  • Wegmans (94% lean, 6% fat) – 1 and 3 lb. packages with dates 1/3, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/10
  • Plainville Farms (93% lean, 7% fat) – 1 lb. packages with date 1/10

These products have establishment number “P-244” inside of the USDA mark of inspection. They were made on December 18-29, 2020 and sold nationwide.

The onset of the reported Salmonella illnesses ranged from December 28, 2020 to March 4, 2021. They were reported in the following states: Arizona (1), Connecticut (1), Indiana (1), Maine (1), Massachusetts (7), Missouri (1), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (2), New York (4), North Carolina (3), Pennsylvania (4), and Virginia (2). The age range for the infected is 1 to 92, with 2 people being hospitalized (out of available data from 19 people). This is not an inclusive list, as people in other states may have ingested the contaminated ground turkey, too.

About Salmonella

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. June 12th, 2012: Botanical Laboratories Inc. Issues Recall Of Dietary Supplement Because Of Threat Of Salmonella

On June 4th, Over 300 bottles of Wellesse “Digestive 3 in 1 Health” 16 or 33 ounce bottles of health supplements were recalled because of Purimune (Galacto Oligosaccharide), an ingredient used that may have been contaminated with SalmonellaSalmonella is a food borne illness that can cause the infection Salmonellosis.  Symptoms of the infection include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food.

Wellesse is a Botanical Labs product, which is located in Ferndale, WA and the recalled bottles were distributed nationwide after June 1st 2012.

According to the FDA 16 oz. size has "LOT 34441C (followed by a four digit time code) EXP 03/2014" jet coded on the bottom of the bottle.  The 33.8 oz. size has "LOT 34552C (followed by a four digit time code) EXP 03/2014”

May 24th, 2012:Raw Scraped Ground Tuna Outbreak

As of May 17, 2012, there have been 316 individuals infected with a strain of the foodborne pathogen, Salmonella from a tuna product that has the potential to be infected with the pathogen.  304 of the individuals have been infected with Salmonella Bareilly and the remaining 12 with Salmonella Nchanga.  It is believed that these individuals were infected from packages of frozen yellow fin tuna scrape from Moon Marine USA Corporation. 

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), on April 13th, Moon Marine (India) Pvt. Ltd. recalled 58,828 lbs of a frozen raw yellow fin tuna product, labeled as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA.  Subsequently on May 10th, Moon Marine expanded their recall to include 22-pound boxes of “Tuna Strips.”

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a bacterium capable of causing a serious and sometimes life-threatening infection known as salmonellosis.  One of the most common foodborne illnesses, it occurs when food contaminated by Salmonella is consumed.

May 24, 2012: “Tempeh Starter Yeast” Recalled – Possible Salmonella Contamination

On May 22, 2012, IndonesianFoodMart.com recalled all Tempeh Starter Yeast packages because of the potential Salmonella, a foodborne pathogen, contamination. 

IndonesianFoodMart.com is based in Maryland and distributed Tempeh Starter Yeast nationwide and to Australia, Canada, Slovenia, New Zealand, Brunei, Darussalam, Poland and Croatia through direct mail orders.  The recalled yeast is packaged in clear plastic containers in 30gm, 50gm, 250 gm, and 1000 gm sizes.

According to the Federal Drug Administration, there have been several illnesses that maybe connected with this problem.

May 24, 2012: Papaya Recall

On May 17th, 2012, Caribe Produce LTD Co. from Texas has recalled 35 pound cartons of Papaya Maradol because of a Salmonella concern.  286 cartons were all that was recalled, but the Papayas are sold separately with each bearing a label that reads, “3112 CARIBEÑA Papaya MARADOL PRODUCT OF MEXICO www.grandeproduce.com”.  

The recalled papayas from Caribe Produce were distributed to Bronx, NY wholesale and retail stores with expiration dates of May 14th to May 17th of this year.

January 22, 2012: Mystery Mexican Style Restaurant Linked To 68 Confirmed Illnesses

On January 19, 2012, the CDC released a report of its investigation of a multistate Salmonella food poisoning outbreak linked to a Mexican-style fast food restaurant chain, identified as “Restaurant Chain A.”  Missing from the report was the identity of the restaurant; and releasing that information would both serve and protect the public.  The FDA, and state and local public health officials were also involved in the investigation.

 

The outbreak was caused by the foodborne pathogen Salmonella Enteritidis, and according to the CDC it appears to be over.  Over… as in first many people, including 68 confirmed cases, had to be sickened.

 

The CDC reports:

“As of January 19, 2012, a total of 68 individuals infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis have been reported from 10 states. The number of ill persons identified in each state with the outbreak strain was as follows: Texas (43), Oklahoma (16), Kansas (2), Iowa (1), Michigan (1), Missouri (1), Nebraska (1), New Mexico (1), Ohio (1), and Tennessee (1).”

The illnesses began on or after October 13, 2011.

January 12, 2012: Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak, Nineteen People Sickened

On January 5, 2012, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an update for the ongoing ground beef Salmonella typhimurium outbreak.  A total of 19 people have been infected from 7 states including:  HI (1), KY (1), MA (1), ME (4), NH (6), NY (5), and VT (1).  This outbreak is linked to ground beef sold at sold at Hannaford, a Scarborough, ME, based grocery chain.

 

Hannaford recalled the ground beef on December 15, 2011.  At that tiem there were 14 confirmed cases of Salmonella foodpoisoning.  Additional details of this recall can be found at Hannaford Ground Beef Recall.

January 4, 2012: B&M, Inc Recalls O Organics Celery Seed

B&M Inc. of Vernon, Missouri, has announced the recall of O Organics Organic Celery Seed on December 16, 2011, because of the threat of a contamination from the organism, Salmonella. This product is sold throughout the country at Safeway-owned stores including Safeway, Carrs, Dominick’s, Genuardi’s, Pak ‘N Save, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb and Vons.

 

The recalled organic celery seed is packaged in 1.8 oz glass bottles and have a UPC code of 0-7989341124-8. The recalled product was sold between May 25, 2011 and December 16, 2011. The link to the table of lot numbers and “Best By” dates of the recalled product is below.  This information can be found at the bottom of the bottle.

January 4, 2012: Swanson Health Products Recalls Organic Celery Seed

On December 16, 2011, Swanson’s Organic Celery Seed by Swanson Health Products because of the possibility that it is contaminated with the foodborne pathogen, Salmonella.

 

The recalled celery seed is packaged in 1.4 oz. plastic bottles with a UPC code of 0-8761424048-0.  The lot number and “Best By” date are 1541102C and June 3, 2013, respectively; this information can be found on the bottom of the bottle.

 

The recalled product was sold at the Swanson Health Products retail store in Fargo, ND, shipped to individual consumers, and could be held for pick up and the Swanson Health Products headquarters.  The recalled celery seed was sold from June 16, 2011 – December 16, 2011.

December 28, 2011: Starwest Botanicals Recalls Organic Celery Seed- Possible Salmonella Contamination

On December 14, 2011, Starwest Organic Celery Seed was recalled by Starwest Botanicals, because the producst may be contaminated with Salmonella.

 

The recalled seeds were shipped to individual costumers or bought at the Starwest Botanicals store and were sold between April 14 and December 14 of 2011.

 

The recall announcement included:

  • Starwest Botanicals Celery Seed (Whole) 2oz. with UPC 7-6796310619-3 and lot number F7073 found on the bottom of the pouch.
  • Starwest Botanicals Celery Seed (Whole) 1 pound with UPC 7-6796307864-3 and lot number 40203 found on the bottom of the pouch.
