November 2, 2018: Barcelona Nut Company Recall Announced For Roasted Pistachios Due To Potential Salmonella Contamination

Barcelona Nut Company Recall

The Barcelona Nut Company of Baltimore, Maryland, is recalling 239 cases of roasted and salted in shell pistachios, because the product has the potential to be contaminated with the foodborne pathogen, Salmonella. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

Since Barcelona Nut Company received product from the same lot, it is necessary to take precautions. Barcelona Nut Company has ceased the production and distribution of this particular lot of roasted and salted in shell pistachios as the FDA and the companies involved continue their investigation.”
