On April 20, 2015, Ventura County Public Health (VCPH) announced an investigation of 25 confirmed cases of Salmonella paratyphi infection that may be linked to eating sushi or raw tuna. According to the VCPH press release, 7 of the confirmed Salmonella cases reside in LA County, 4 in Orange County, 2 in Riverside County, 1 in Santa Barbara County, and 4 in Ventura County. Seven of the outbreak victims do not reside in California, however, most of these patients had recently traveled to Southern California.
The press release also cautions members of the public to seek medical attention and diagnostic testing if they experience nausea, diarrhea (with or without blood), abdominal cramping and fever, especially if raw fish was recently consumed. Salmonella food poisoning is typically confirmed by culturing a stool sample for the presence of Salmonella bacteria.
