FDA Salmonella Thompson Seafood Outbreak News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Thompson related to seafood distributed by Northeast Seafood Products.
In conjunction with the FDA, Northeast Seafood Products has issued a recall for various seafood products.
FDA Salmonella Thompson Seafood Outbreak Information
On October 8, 2021, the FDA, along with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and state and local officials, are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Thompson infections linked to seafood distributed by Northeast Seafood Products of Denver, CO.
The majority of the sick individuals are from Colorado or had been to Colorado during the week they got sick. Two people had not traveled to Colorado during the week they became ill. There have been 19 hospitalizations and 102 reported illnesses related to this seafood Salmonella outbreak: AZ (1), CO (82), CT (1), IA (1), MN (2), MO (1), NE (2), NJ (2), PA (1), TX (2), VA (2), WA (2), WI (2), WY (2).
The CDC’s epidemiological information and subsequent analysis has indicated that seafood is the leading hypothesis for the cause of illnesses related to this outbreak. The FDA’s traceback investigation identified Northeast Seafood Products as the common denominator. Officials collected samples from Northeast Seafood Products on October 7, 2021. These samples came back positive for Salmonella Thompson and were further determined to match the outbreak strain.
Earlier on October 8, 2021, Northeast Seafood Products recalled Haddock, Monkfish, Bone-in Trout, Grouper, Red Snapper, Red Rock Cod, Ocean Perch, Pacific Cod, Halibut, Coho Salmon, Atlantic Salmon Portions, Lane Snapper, Tilapia, All Natural Salmon Fillet, Pacific Sole, and Farm Raised Striped Bass. The affected products were sold to restaurants, Safeway, Albertsons, and Sprouts supermarkets in Colorado. Though, the Pacific Cod sold through Sprouts is not part of the recall. Northeast Seafood Products has temporarily shut down production until a specific cause is determined.
FDA officials recommend that consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, serve, or sell any recalled seafood. Individuals who have purchased the affected products should throw them away.

Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
