July 28, 2009: Chai Tea Recall in Michigan

Fireside Coffee Co., Swartz Creek, MI, is recalling chai tea packages due to the possible contamination with Salmonella.

The Fireside chai tea includes select lot numbers of four different flavors of tea including: spiced, chocolate, vanilla and decaf vanilla.

The recalled chai tea was sold nationwide at retail stores, through mail order and at art fairs.

According to the CDC, Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weak immune systems. People infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses, such as arterial infections (infected aneurysms), infection of the lining of the heart, and arthritis.
