May 24, 2012: Papaya Recall

On May 17th, 2012, Caribe Produce LTD Co. from Texas has recalled 35 pound cartons of Papaya Maradol because of a Salmonella concern.  286 cartons were all that was recalled, but the Papayas are sold separately with each bearing a label that reads, “3112 CARIBEÑA Papaya MARADOL PRODUCT OF MEXICO www.grandeproduce.com”.  

The recalled papayas from Caribe Produce were distributed to Bronx, NY wholesale and retail stores with expiration dates of May 14th to May 17th of this year. 

Salmonella is an organism that can cause the infection salmonellosis.  Symptoms of a Salmonella infection may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint.  The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to suffer severe illness
