November 7, 2007: North Carolina Mexican Restaurant Linked to Salmonella Outbreak

Carniceria y Taqueria Hermanos Chavez restaurant in Newton, North Carolina, is closed while health officials investigate a Salmonella food poisoning outbreak that may be linked to the restaurant. Carniceria y Taqueria Hermanos Chavez is located off U.S. 321 Business.

Public health officials stated that 98 people have reported Salmonella food poisoning symptoms, and 13 have already tested positive for Salmonella. Most of the patients reported having eaten at the same Mexican restaurant. Several of the restaurant employees have also reported Salmonella food poisoning symptoms.

Health officials are urging people with diarrhea and other Salmonella food poisoning symptoms to get tested. For more information about free testing, or to report a suspected case of Salmonella food poisoning, call the Catawba County Public Health Department at 828-695-5800.

The Catawba County Public Health Department has notified childcare centers, physicians, and restaurants of the Salmonella outbreak. They have also urged that people with Salmonella symptoms not work with children, food or in health care, and that individuals have two negative stool cultures before returning to work.

Salmonella food poisoning symptoms may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food. The illness usually lasts 4-7 days, and most people recover without treatment. Individuals with diarrhea usually recover completely, although it may be several months before their bowel habits are entirely normal. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to suffer severe illness.
