Red Onions Salmonella Newport Outbreak Update News – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an update regarding their ongoing investigation into the Salmonella Newport red onions multi-state outbreak.
The FDA’s last update was on July 31, 2020.
RED ONIONS SALMONELLA NEWPORT OUTBREAK UPDATE INFORMATION
On August 3, 2020, the FDA advised they are continuing their investigation into a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Newport linked to Thomson International, Inc.’s (Thomson International) red onions. On August 1, Thomson International issued a recall as to all varieties of onions that may have come in contact with the potentially contaminated red onions. The affected products include red, yellow, white, and sweet yellow onions shipped from May 1, 2020 to present.
To date, 396 total illnesses have been reported, including 59 hospitalizations. States with cases include: AK (6), AZ (14), CA (49), CO (10), FL (3), ID (5), IL (10), IN (2), IA (15), KS (1), KY (1), ME (4), MD (1), MI (23), MN (10), MO (6), MT (33), NE (5), NV (5), NY (4), NC (3), ND (5), OH (7), OR (71), PA (2), SC (1), SD (11), TN (5), TX (1), UT (61), VA (4), WA (2), WI (5), and WY (11).
The FDA is continuing their traceback investigation and will continue to issue updates.
ABOUT SALMONELLA
Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Questions or concerns about foodborne illness should also be directed to your health care provider.
