Salmonella outbreak linked to ground turkey news – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS), along with other state and local agencies, have announced that there is a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Hader linked to ground turkey.
Information on Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Ground Turkey
As of April 12, 2021, the CDC has reported 28 people, across 12 states, have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Hader linked to several ground turkey products. The CDC, USDA-FSIS, and state and local officials are continuing their investigation of this multi-state Salmonella outbreak, but epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data point to ground turkey as the source of the illnesses. Officials are continuing to investigate this outbreak.
The affected ground turkey products are:
- Nature’s Promise (94% lean, 6% fat) – 1 lb. packages with dates 1/1, 1/3, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/10
- Wegmans (94% lean, 6% fat) – 1 and 3 lb. packages with dates 1/3, 1/4, 1/8, and 1/10
- Plainville Farms (93% lean, 7% fat) – 1 lb. packages with date 1/10
These products have establishment number “P-244” inside of the USDA mark of inspection. They were made on December 18-29, 2020 and sold nationwide.
The onset of the reported Salmonella illnesses ranged from December 28, 2020 to March 4, 2021. They were reported in the following states: Arizona (1), Connecticut (1), Indiana (1), Maine (1), Massachusetts (7), Missouri (1), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (2), New York (4), North Carolina (3), Pennsylvania (4), and Virginia (2). The age range for the infected is 1 to 92, with 2 people being hospitalized (out of available data from 19 people). This is not an inclusive list, as people in other states may have ingested the contaminated ground turkey, too.
Common symptoms of salmonellosis (Salmonella infection) may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating a contaminated food product. Illness usually lasts from about 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment, however, the diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
