Salmonella Pot Pies News Update – Health officials have linked 139 cases of Salmonella food poisoning in 30 states to Banquet turkey and chicken pot pies manufactured by ConAgra Foods Inc.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began its Salmonella outbreak investigation on Wednesday of last week after numerous cases of Salmonella illness were reported. The largest numbers of cases have been reported in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Missouri.
Salmonella Pot Pies – Product Information
The Missouri plant that manufactures the Banquet and generic store-brand turkey and chicken pot pies has halted their production. The pot pies affected by this current Salmonella outbreak have a “P-9” printed on the side of the box as part of a code above the use-by date.
Health officials warn that the pot pies should not be eaten, and the USDA Food Safety Inspections Service issued a public health alert on Tuesday afternoon, warning consumers about the link between the pot pies and the Salmonella food poisoning cases.
This is the second time this year that a ConAgra product has been linked to a nationwide food poisoning outbreak. In February, ConAgra recalled its Peter Pan band peanut butter after it was learned that the contaminated product was responsible for well over 600 confirmed cases of Salmonella food poisoning in 47 states. The peanut butter was manufactured at ConAgra’s Sylvester, Ga., plant.
Salmonella Food Poisoning Symptoms
Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food. The illness usually lasts 4-7 days, and most people recover without treatment. Individuals with diarrhea usually recover completely, although it may be several months before their bowel habits are entirely normal. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to suffer severe illness.
