September 14, 2009: Could Shredded Lettuce Be Responsible for Salmonella Outbreak?

The CDC, FDA and Oregon Public Health Department [OPHD] are teaming together to find out exactly what caused an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium during the months of July and August.

A representative from the OPHD stated that seven people became sick between Aug. 4 to 16, including three in the Portland metro area.  Nationwide, it has been reported that approximately 124 people were sickened by the foodborne contaminant.

The CDC and FDA suspect that shredded lettuce may be the cause of the problem, but investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, and joint pain. Symptoms usually appear within 12-72 hours after the ingestion of contaminated food.
